You will now have downloaded 2 files

File 1: redsn0w_mac_0.9.6b6.zip (please extract this file from the zip and install it in your applications folder)

File 2: iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw

Jailbreak instructions: Complete all 12 steps and then use the Unlock instructions if needed.

  1. Open File 1: redsn0w
  2. Click on the browse button and select the file you downloaded as File 2: and Click open
  3. When you see the message that the IPSW has been successfully identified Click Next
  4. Uncheck all options except "Install Cydia" Click Next
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions that are shown below:

Points to note at this stage.

The device must be connected to the computer

The device must then be powered off using the slide to power off option.

On the next screen you will be asked to complete three timed instructions that will be displayed on the screen so be prepared.  Screenshots of these actions are shown below

First you will be asked to Press the Power button for 3 seconds - a Tip for this step follows the screenshots.

Without releasing the Power Button also hold down the Home button for 10 seconds

Then without releasing the Home button, release the Power Button but keep the Home button pressed down for a further 30 seconds.  Successfully doing this will put the device into DFU mode required for the jailbreak. 

Important Tip

As you only have 3 seconds to hold the Power button after clicking the Next button I recommend that you start pressing the Power button before you click the Next button.

Putting the device into DFU mode is all about timing and the tip above will avoid you seeing the message below

redsn0w 0.9.61b failed to enter DFU mode. Start again

If you see an error like the one above simply repeat the steps above and ensure that when you are on the screen that tells you to power off the device remember to press and hold the power button just before you click the next button.

6. Click Finish in Redsn0w

7. It is very important if you have not already done so that you save your unique SHSH key so that if you have any problems with your iPhone in the future you can always get back to this point.  Please see our steps for saving your SHSH key

Important:

When the jailbreak has completed the phone will restart. If it displays the apple iTunes logo the phone has a tethered jailbreak (this will be for most iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 models and also the latest iTouch)

With a tethered jailbreak to start the phone after any power off you must use the redsn0w application to restart the phone. To do this complete the following steps:

a. Open redsn0w and click on the browse button

b. Browse to the iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw and click open.

c. Click Next

d. Select Just boot tethered right now - deselect everything else

e. Follow the remaining instructions onscreen.
